Madhya Pradesh police officer killed during anti-liquor operation in Dewas
Khategaon police station in-charge Dilip Puri died after a truck allegedly ran over him during a late-night interception on Monday.
Khategaon police station in-charge Dilip Puri was killed during an anti-liquor operation on the Indore-Betul highway in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district around 1.30 am on Monday, according to Mathrubhumi.
Puri and his team had arrived at the location following reports of suspected liquor smuggling. While the officer was approaching the driver of a parked truck to demand he exit the vehicle, the driver allegedly drove the truck onto the divider and ran over Puri with a rear wheel.
The driver then reportedly crossed the divider, abandoned the vehicle at Sandalpur, and escaped. The truck was found to be carrying 208 boxes containing approximately 1,800 litres of Indian-made foreign liquor, Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra told The Times of India.
Puri was taken to a hospital where medical staff attempted to save him for nearly two hours using emergency measures, including CPR, but he later died. He was leading five special teams involved in the district's anti-liquor drive.
Dewas police have moved the vehicle to the Sandalpur police station. Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra said a special investigation team has been formed to find the individuals responsible for the smuggling and to establish where the liquor was being sent.
