MCD receives structural safety certificates from 250 of 2,457 surveyed PGs
The civic body will issue verbal reminders and notices to owners who fail to submit required documents for their establishments.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has received structural safety certificates from approximately 250 of the 2,457 paying guest (PG) accommodations surveyed across its 12 zones, according to ThePrint.
The compliance exercise follows a September 6 collapse of a PG in Satya Niketan that killed seven people and critically injured six others. The Delhi High Court subsequently directed the MCD to inspect PG accommodations to check structural safety and adherence to building norms.
The MCD asked owners to conduct fresh structural audits through engineers empanelled with the civic body to assess building stability and load-bearing capacity. An official said the response was initially slow but the process is now picking up pace.
The corporation plans to first give verbal reminders to owners who have not submitted the certificates. If they fail to comply, the MCD will issue formal notices and may initiate actions such as sealing the premises.
Under Section 348 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, municipal authorities have the power to inspect buildings deemed dangerous or ruinous and take steps like repairs or demolition to address safety issues.
