Media urged to highlight climate crises ahead of COP-31
Speakers at a Hyderabad media consultation called for proactive reporting on environmental issues and regional climate challenges.
The media industry needs to play an active role in informing the public about climate action and environmental crises, according to speakers at a media consultation in Hyderabad on Monday.
The event, held at the Somajiguda Press Club, was organised by the Council for Green Revolution (CGR) and the Press Club Hyderabad. It included editors and senior journalists from digital, electronic, and print media, Telangana Today reported.
Public policy expert Donthi Narasimha Reddy delivered the keynote address and stated that COP-31, which is scheduled for November 9 to 20 in Antalya, Turkey, represents a vital moment for the world. He said developed nations have not met their climate finance commitments, which leaves developing countries at risk from extreme weather.
The session was chaired by former RTI Commissioner M Dileep Reddy. Other participants included economist Mohan Guruswamy, Professor Purushotham Reddy, Mulugu Somashekar, Devulapalli Amar, CGR Chairperson Leela Lakshma Reddy, and Founder K Lakshma Reddy.
Speakers noted that local journalism is essential for reporting on regional issues like biodiversity loss and erratic rainfall. They also said media coverage is necessary to hold authorities accountable for climate challenges.
