Nagarkurnool: Chilli farmers protest over alleged supply of spurious seeds

Farmers in Thadooru mandal demand compensation and an investigation after chilli crops across 150 acres failed to bear fruit.

Chilli farmers from Gunthakoduru, Thadooru mandal, and surrounding areas in Nagarkurnool brought failed chilli plants to the District Collector's office on Monday. According to Telangana Today, the farmers lodged a complaint during the 'Praja Vani' programme, alleging that the supply of spurious seeds caused their crops to fail.

The farmers stated that they cultivated varieties including Kalash, Eesha, Kuber 305, and Rakhi across more than 150 acres. While the plants grew vigorously, they failed to bear fruit after three months of cultivation.

CPM District Secretary V Parvatalu, who supported the farmers, said that cultivators had invested up to Rs 3 lakh per acre. He urged district officials to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the seed supply and called for immediate action against the responsible companies.

The farmers also expressed frustration regarding a lack of support from local Agriculture Extension Officers (AEOs), claiming the officers failed to provide guidance or address their concerns. They have demanded that officials from the Agriculture and Horticulture department take action against the seed companies and their dealers.
