Seven freight wagons derail during shunting at Tamil Nadu railway yard
Southern Railway officials reported that the incident occurred on Sunday evening at the Jolarpettai wagon depot yard.
Seven wagons of a freight train slipped off the tracks during a shunting procedure at the Jolarpettai wagon depot yard in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, according to ANI.
The incident took place at approximately 7:15 pm when eight wagons were being moved. No injuries were reported during the derailment.
Railway emergency teams arrived at the site to perform re-railing and track restoration. Southern Railway stated that the wagons were cleared and work was finished by 12:20 am on November 2.
The restoration work caused minor disruptions to passenger services. Train No. 16520, the KSR Bengaluru–Jolarpettai MEMU service, was short-terminated at Somanayakkanpatti railway station.
A gatekeeper alerted authorities after hearing unusual noises from the coaches. Railway personnel then issued an emergency warning and stopped trains approaching Jolarpettai from Bengaluru to prevent an accident.
The railway administration has ordered a departmental inquiry to determine the exact cause of the derailment.
