Firefighters use 1.7 lakh litres of water to control Kundaim scrapyard fire
Eight fire tenders were deployed to tackle the blaze that broke out at a scrap yard in the early hours of Monday.
Firefighters used approximately 1.7 lakh litres of water and 700 litres of foam to contain a major fire at a Kundaim scrapyard in the early hours of Monday, according to The Times of India.
The blaze started around 3am and involved large amounts of plastic, rubber, cloth, and PVC waste, which was reportedly stacked up to 10 metres high in sheds.
Fire and emergency services deputy director Rajendra Haldankar said the fire had taken over the entire shed, forcing personnel to douse the entrance before they could enter.
Eight fire tenders from Kundaim, Ponda, Old Goa, Margao, Bicholim, and the St Inez-Panaji headquarters were used to manage the situation.
While the fire was contained by morning, isolated flare-ups occurred because of the wind, and heavy machinery was used to move debris and cover embers with mud.
An LPG cylinder was located inside the shed where labourers were staying, but no injuries were reported. A local resident alleged the yard operated without panchayat permission, while landowner Santosh Naik said he had sought to evict the operator through the collector.
Fire officials stated that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined as investigations continue.
