Thiruvananthapuram: 17-year-old donates organs to six people after road accident

The parents of the deceased student consented to the organ donation following his brain stem death on Monday.

A 17-year-old student from Thiruvananthapuram donated his organs to six people after he was declared brain dead on Monday, according to The Hindu.

The student, Rudresh S.R., was a Plus Two student at A.M.H.S.S. School, Thirumala, who suffered brain stem death following a road traffic accident on the Karamana–Killippalam road on the night of October 26.

Following consent from his parents, B. Suresh and P. Remya Devi, the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) coordinated the donation process.

Medical teams harvested both kidneys, the pancreas, the liver, both corneas, and the abdominal fascia and vessels. A transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) found the heart unsuitable for transplantation, so it was not retrieved.

One kidney was transplanted into an end-stage renal failure patient at Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. The other kidney and the pancreas went to a patient with multi-organ failure at KIMSHEALTH, Thiruvananthapuram.

The liver, abdominal fascia, and vessels were also allocated to patients at KIMSHEALTH, while the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Thiruvananthapuram, retrieved the corneas.
