TGERC holds hearing on 7,800 MW renewable energy procurement
The Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission met to discuss power plans from TG-Genco and TG-Redco involving solar, wind, and battery storage.
The Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC) conducted a public hearing on Tuesday regarding the procurement of 7,800 MW of renewable energy. The proposal involves the Telangana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TG-Genco) and the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TG-Redco), according to The Hindu.
TG-Redco plans to procure 2,000 MW of Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) on a round-the-clock basis, 800 MW of wind energy, and 3,000 MW of solar power. This solar plan includes a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with 1,000 MW capacity and 6,000 MWh storage capacity.
TG-Genco intends to procure 2,000 MW of BESS under the FDRE framework. The hearing allowed for public participation regarding these utility plans.
Former energy minister and BRS MLA G. Jagadish Reddy questioned the reasoning for this procurement, alleging that utilities cannot properly supply existing energy. He claimed the government might increase the burden on the public and limit farm power to daytime hours.
Reddy also alleged that thermal stations are not running at full rated capacity, suggesting the purchase of energy at higher rates from friendly companies. He noted that agricultural pump-sets in most parts of the state do not receive power between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
