Tamil Nadu leads in research and patents in Niti Aayog scoreboard
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra are the top three states for research publications according to a new Niti Aayog report.
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra have emerged as the leading states in research publications according to the India Science and Technology (S&T) Scoreboard launched on Tuesday, Moneycontrol reported. The scoreboard is an interactive platform developed by Niti Aayog to provide an integrated view of the science and technology landscape across Indian states and Union Territories.
In the 2024-25 period, Tamil Nadu recorded 44,611 research publications, while Uttar Pradesh had 29,298 and Maharashtra had 28,947. Tamil Nadu also leads in patent applications filed, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Niti Aayog vice chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri said that for India to advance further in science and technology, states must play a more significant role. He stated that the scoreboard would assist states in identifying their strengths and weaknesses to create better science and technology policies through cooperative and competitive federalism.
Niti Aayog member (S&T) Abhay Karandikar noted that research and innovation data has previously been spread across different sources, making it hard for states to evaluate their positions. He said the new dashboard brings ecosystem, publication, and patent data together to help states monitor their progress over time.
Department of Science and Technology Secretary Umesh V Waghmare said the scoreboard provides a useful state-level view for the national science and technology evidence base. The platform includes data on higher education, R&D institutions, deep tech startups, and incubators.
