Eight arrested for assaulting BSF personnel in Tripura
The attack in Sepahijala district occurred after an altercation involving a local resident and BSF personnel over an alleged smuggling issue.
Police arrested eight people on Tuesday in Tripura’s Sepahijala district for assaulting four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, including an assistant commandant, according to reports by Hindustan Times and Prabhat Khabar.
The incident took place on Monday at Ashabari, Boxanagar, following an altercation between BSF personnel from the 49th Battalion and a local resident regarding an alleged smuggling-related issue. Local residents reportedly protested by blocking the Boxanagar-Rahimpur road after a local man was allegedly assaulted and sustained a leg fracture during detention.
During the protest, a crowd attacked assistant commandant Rohit Kumar, his staff, and vandalised their vehicle. Prabhat Khabar reported that attackers also attempted to snatch weapons from the injured personnel.
Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the assault on X, stating that violence against security personnel is unacceptable and a matter of grave concern. He directed authorities to take swift and stringent action against those responsible to ensure justice is delivered.
The injured BSF personnel were taken to a local primary health centre for preliminary treatment. Investigations into the circumstances of the dispute are ongoing.
