AJUP leader Humayun Kabir defends mosque project plans amid backlash
The Naoda MLA says international support and community sentiment drive his commitment to the construction project.
Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) leader and Naoda MLA Humayun Kabir has defended plans to host a gathering on December 6 to mark the construction of a mosque project, according to ANI. Kabir stated the project is an emotional issue for Muslims in India and globally, citing support from countries including Bangladesh, Oman, Qatar, Dubai, and Saudi Arabia.
The legislator said he intends to gather 5 lakh people on December 6 to mark one year since the foundation was laid. Kabir announced that he aims to open the entire mosque for Muslims worldwide on December 6, 2028.
Addressing previous administrative hurdles, Kabir claimed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had created disturbances by suggesting the project would cause law and order problems. He said he is working to heal the pain caused by the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid.
The remarks follow Kabir's recent comment about blocking National Highway 12, which drew criticism from political leaders. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar warned the MLA that blocking a national highway is a crime under the Nyaya Sanhita and suggested he rename the masjid.
West Bengal State Minister Shankar Ghosh criticised the MLA, while Uttar Pradesh Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar said that if people want to build a mosque, they should obtain necessary permission. Rajbhar added that police would deal with anyone attempting to block a highway on the spot.
