LDF seeks to mobilise coastal community against UDF maritime corridor plan
The Left Democratic Front aims to harness the support of Kerala's 20 lakh-strong coastal population against the Mission Samudra Initiative.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Tuesday sought to mobilise Kerala's expansive coastal community against the United Democratic Front (UDF) government's Mission Samudra Initiative (MSI), according to The Hindu.
The MSI is a flagship project intended to transform the 640 km coastline into a high-value maritime economic corridor featuring townships, tourism resorts, marinas, and shipbuilding centres.
The LDF has raised concerns regarding the potential large-scale displacement of fisherfolk, the loss of traditional livelihoods, and a lack of free access to the coastline.
Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan addressed a fishworkers' demonstration in front of the Government Secretariat, stating the Kerala Maritime Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, could allow the board to unilaterally seize coastal land to hand over to private corporates at concessional rates.
The Bill sanctions the creation of land banks near ports, harbours, and fish landing centres for corporate-backed commercial projects to attract private investment.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan stated in the Assembly that the proposed maritime land bank would use only government land and would not displace fishers. He added that the MSI would boost the local economy and generate significant employment opportunities.
