Apple to mandate 18+ rating for dating and romantic AI apps
New App Store guidelines will require developers to disclose dating features and real-world location sharing to improve user safety.
Apple is updating its App Store guidelines to require an 18+ age rating for dating applications and AI chatbots that provide romantic or sexual interactions, according to reports by Moneycontrol, Times Now, and Mathrubhumi.
The new rules target apps that facilitate connections between real people or allow users to engage with virtual companions through romantic or sexual content. This classification will include AI companion platforms, such as Character.AI and Replika, if they offer such features.
Starting November 16, 2026, developers must answer new questions regarding these features on the App Store Connect platform. All existing applications must complete these updated declarations by January 12, 2027.
The company is also introducing transparency requirements for apps that share a user's real-world location with others. While this disclosure is intended to address privacy concerns, Apple noted that location-sharing features may not increase the minimum age rating in every region.
In Brazil, specific local regulations apply. Applications providing location-sharing services must carry an A16 rating, while those with dating or relationship features require an A18 rating. Developers in Brazil may request a lower official age classification from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security for certain applications, such as those designed for families to track locations.
