Sachin Tendulkar suggests Vaibhav Sooryavanshi avoid leadership roles for now

The legendary batter believes the 15-year-old should focus on gaining more red-ball cricket experience instead of taking on captaincy duties.

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has suggested that teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should be kept away from leadership roles for the time being. Speaking during a Reddit 'Ask Me Anything' session on Tuesday, Tendulkar said the focus should be on providing the player with more game time, according to Moneycontrol.

The remark follows Sooryavanshi being named vice-captain of East Zone for the 2026 Duleep Trophy. Tendulkar stated that it is too early for the 15-year-old to hold such a position and insisted he needs to play more red-ball matches to gain experience.

Sooryavanshi was appointed as deputy to Ishan Kishan in East Zone, a move that overlooked seasoned players such as Abhimanyu Easwaran, Mohammed Shami, and Mukesh Kumar. The teenager, who has played a limited number of first-class matches for Bihar, later captained the side in a semi-final after Kishan suffered a finger injury.

The player has already made his T20I debut for India against England earlier this year. While he has been used sporadically, he recently scored 45 runs off 19 balls against New Zealand in his last T20I appearance.

Tendulkar emphasised the importance of taking one step at a time to allow the player to develop in red-ball cricket.
