Assam targets 11.7 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has invited industry leaders to partner with the state in its clean energy transition.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that the state is targeting 11.7 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. According to The Assam Tribune, the Chief Minister made this announcement after attending the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi.
Sarma, who attended the summit in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stated that the target falls under the state's Integrated Clean Energy Policy. He invited industry leaders to partner with Assam to build a greener Viksit Bharat.
The state plans to add more than 8,000 MW of power capacity in the coming years. Official sources told The Assam Tribune that approximately 3,200 MW of this addition will come from conventional sources, while the remaining capacity will be generated through non-conventional sources.
A 3,200 MW supercritical thermal power plant is currently under development at Chapar in Dhubri district, with phased commissioning scheduled to begin in December 2030. Additionally, statutory clearances have been received for power projects with a combined capacity of 4,900 MW in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts.
Renewable initiatives include a 70 MW AC solar photovoltaic project already commissioned in Bilasipara, Dhubri district. A 50 MW AC solar project is also being developed at No. 3 Sitalmari village in Dhekiajuli.
Two joint ventures involving the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) are also underway. One with NLC India Renewables Ltd and another with SJVN Green Energy Ltd aim to develop 1,000 MW of solar and renewable power projects respectively, with land identification currently in progress.
