Mark Cuban advises young workers to accept ordinary jobs for experience
The billionaire investor suggests that graduates should focus on building responsibility and practical skills rather than waiting for perfect roles.
Billionaire investor Mark Cuban has advised young workers to stop waiting for the perfect role and instead accept ordinary jobs to build experience, according to a report by the Times of India.
Speaking on an episode of The Diary of a CEO, Cuban said that perfect jobs are difficult to find and encouraged people to simply get a job. He noted that early employment helps individuals demonstrate responsibility and move up the professional ladder.
Cuban, who previously worked as a bartender, dance teacher, and deli meat slicer, said early roles teach employees how to manage schedules, work under supervision, and collaborate with diverse colleagues. He also suggested workers should learn how their employers generate revenue and how to increase their own productivity.
His advice mirrors comments made by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who told Fortune in a 2025 interview that he advises young people to work at McDonald’s. Bezos stated that such roles teach responsibility, how to show up, how to interact with people, and how to hustle.
Other technology leaders have shared similar views on early career decisions. Google CEO Sundar Pichai told Stanford graduates that early choices are often less consequential than they seem, while Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang emphasised that resilience is vital for success.
