Gujarat jails on high alert after email bomb threat

Security teams searched Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad after an email targeted several prisons across the state.

Jails across Gujarat have been placed on high alert after an email containing a bomb threat was sent to the office of the Gujarat Director General of Police, according to a report by Urban Acres.

The email allegedly named jails in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Surat as targets.

In Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, local police, and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad searched the Sabarmati Central Jail premises. The operation included sensitive barracks and used sniffer dogs, metal detectors, and additional equipment. No explosive devices were found during the searches.

Sabarmati jail houses gangsters, prisoners linked to terror activities, and convicts in serial-blast cases. Authorities have increased security in high-security zones, including the Anda Cell, and have strengthened surveillance at watchtowers and the CCTV control room.

A case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station. Investigators and digital experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory are examining server logs and email headers to find the sender. The technical inquiry is looking into whether the sender used encrypted email services, a virtual private network, or a proxy server.

The statewide alert and searches are continuing while investigators work to trace the origin of the email.
