Tamil Nadu permits firecrackers for two hours on Deepavali
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has urged citizens to use low-noise green firecrackers and follow specific time windows for celebrations.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has announced that firecrackers can only be burst during two specific windows on Deepavali 2026, according to The Hindu.
The permitted timings are between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., and between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. The TNPCB has appealed to the public to use low-noise, less-polluting green firecrackers.
These restrictions have been in place since 2018 following Supreme Court directions issued on October 23, 2018. The court directed manufacturers to use raw materials that reduce emissions and produce green firecrackers.
The TNPCB cautioned that firecrackers can cause temporary or permanent hearing impairment and contribute to air, water, and land pollution. The Board advised people to avoid series firecrackers that generate high noise levels.
The Board suggested bursting crackers at designated common locations after getting permission from local bodies or district administration. Firecrackers should not be burst in silence zones, such as near schools, hospitals, courts, or places of worship.
