More than 50 Assam Engineering College students fall ill after monkey found in water tank

Students at the Guwahati institution were hospitalised after a monkey carcass was discovered in a hostel water tank on November 2.

More than 50 students of Assam Engineering College in Guwahati have reportedly fallen ill after a dead monkey was found in a hostel water tank, according to The Sentinel.

The incident was discovered on November 2 when students in Hostel No. 7 reported an unusual smell in their water supply. An inspection later that evening revealed the monkey carcass inside the tank.

The carcass had reportedly been in the tank for nearly a week. Students claimed they had been using the water since Durga Puja, and the supply was also allegedly used for cooking at the hostel mess.

Following the discovery, more than 50 students were admitted to the Ayurvedic College Hospital in Jalukbari. While some have recovered, others are still receiving treatment, including those receiving IV fluids in their hostel rooms.

Students at the college have raised concerns regarding the absence of regular inspections and the failure to provide safe drinking water.
