Maharashtra: IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe stresses milk quality and safe storage
The Food and Drug Administration official highlighted the importance of maintaining the cold chain during milk transportation and retail storage.
Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official Tukaram Mundhe has highlighted the importance of milk quality and safe storage practices, according to NorthBlockSouthBlock.
Mundhe, a 2005-batch Maharashtra cadre IAS officer, spoke at a public event regarding the journey milk takes from packaging to the consumer's kitchen. He noted that maintaining proper hygiene and temperature is essential throughout the supply chain, including during transportation and at retail outlets.
The officer stated that milk should be kept at approximately 4°C or lower to preserve quality and reduce spoilage risks. He explained that refrigeration helps slow bacterial growth, whereas exposure to higher temperatures for long periods increases the chance of deterioration.
Mundhe observed that while tea is a regular part of Indian culture, many cups contain higher amounts of sugar and milk than tea leaves. He suggested that consumers should focus on the safety of the milk they use rather than just their tea-drinking habits.
To ensure safety, Mundhe advised consumers to purchase from trusted suppliers, follow packaging instructions, and refrigerate milk promptly after purchase. He also recommended checking for unusual smells, colours, or appearances that might indicate spoilage.
