BJP councillor booked for slapping worker in Prayagraj
The incident occurred at a party event when a worker questioned the Deputy Chief Minister about University Grants Commission regulations.
A BJP councillor has been booked for slapping a party worker during a 'Prabuddh Sammelan' at Parade Ground in Prayagraj on Sunday, according to India Today.
The worker, Rohit Tiwari, also known as Kaka, and another man questioned Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya regarding the stayed UGC (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026.
As Maurya addressed the gathering, the men asked him to speak about the regulations. After Maurya told them to be quiet, police escorted the men out, but BJP councillor Vinay Mishra ran towards them and slapped Tiwari.
Tiwari filed a complaint at the Daraganj police station on Monday evening, leading to the registration of an FIR against Mishra.
BJP MLA Harshvardhan Bajpai, representing Allahabad North, demanded action against the councillor. Bajpai stated that Tiwari is a committed worker who raised the issue because it is an emotionally sensitive matter regarding potential impacts on future generations.
The UGC Regulations, 2026, were notified on January 13, but the Supreme Court placed an interim stay on them on January 29 following protests over potential misuse.
