Eight arrested for attacking BSF personnel in Tripura

Chief Minister Manik Saha promised strict legal action following the assault on three Border Security Force jawans in Ashabari.

Eight people have been arrested for allegedly attacking Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in the Ashabari area of Tripura's Sepahijala district, according to The Hawk and The News Mill. The incident occurred on Monday morning near the international border under the Kalamchaura Police Station.

A senior police official stated that three BSF personnel, including a Company Commander, were injured when a mob attacked them with sticks and bamboo. The attackers allegedly attempted to snatch a rifle from a jawan and vandalised a government vehicle.

The confrontation reportedly began when BSF personnel noticed Indian and Bangladeshi smugglers allegedly engaged in illegal trade. While Bangladeshi smugglers fled across the border, an Indian smuggler allegedly escaped and informed villagers that he had been assaulted by the BSF.

A large group of men and women then gathered, surrounded the BSF vehicle, and attacked the personnel. One of the attackers was also injured during the incident.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, condemned the assault on X. He stated that violence against security personnel will not be tolerated and that all those involved will be brought to justice.

While eight people have been detained, police officials said an intensive search operation is underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
