Families served eviction notice besiege Chief Minister's vehicle in Tiruchy

More than 200 residents of Sembattu N.M.T. Colony intercepted the convoy of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to protest their eviction.

More than 200 families who received eviction notices in ward 65 of the Tiruchy Corporation besieged the vehicle of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Tiruchy. According to the Deccan Chronicle, the protesters intercepted the Chief Minister's convoy while he was travelling from Tiruchy airport to Pudukkottai.

The residents of the Sembattu N.M.T. Colony area, located near the airport, have lived in the area for over 100 years. The land was originally allocated to meet the housing needs of labourers working at a private tannery factory that used to operate nearby.

The families received an eviction notice a few weeks ago, which claimed that certain individuals had purchased the entire land where they reside. The public alleged that the notice ordered them to vacate their houses within 10 days.

During the protest, the agitators held placards and flex boards and raised slogans demanding justice. Chief Minister Vijay received a petition submitted by the people during the incident.

More than 100 police personnel on security duty rushed to the spot following the siege. Official sources said the police held talks with the protesting public and moved them to the side of the road to clear traffic.
