The Tenerife striker died on Tuesday following a match against FC Andorra where a collision occurred during stoppage time.
Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel died on Tuesday following an on-field collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match on Monday, according to the Times of India.
The incident happened in the seventh minute of stoppage time as De Miguel chased a long ball near the halfway line. Owono, an Equatorial Guinea international, moved out of his area to clear the ball and struck the forward in the chest with his knee.
De Miguel received medical attention on the pitch for over five minutes before being taken away by ambulance. Spanish media stated the player experienced a cardiac arrest while in the ambulance, and Tenerife confirmed his death the following day.
Owono was shown a red card during the match, which was abandoned with the score at 2-2. The goalkeeper is reportedly in shock and has faced abuse on social media.
The Spanish Football Federation's Disciplinary Code allows for suspensions of between four to 12 matches for violent conduct causing serious harm, though authorities must first assess the nature of the challenge. Under the Spanish Penal Code, investigators may also examine if the incident constitutes negligent homicide.
De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 and scored 11 goals in 30 appearances. FC Andorra has expressed condolences to the family and the Tenerife club.
