Gujarat: Security tightened at Sabarmati Central Jail after bomb threat

Police placed prisons across the state on high alert following an email received by the Director General of Police's office on November 3.

Gujarat police have increased security at prisons across the state after an unidentified person sent an email allegedly threatening bomb attacks. According to Urban Acres, the email was sent to the Director General of Police (DGP) office in Gandhinagar on November 3 and mentioned Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad, as well as prisons in Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat.

In Ahmedabad, the Crime Branch, local police, and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad conducted searches at Sabarmati Central Jail. Teams used metal detectors, sniffer dogs and other equipment to check sensitive barracks and key areas. No explosives or bombs were found during the operation.

Security measures at the Sabarmati facility now include increased monitoring from CCTV control rooms and perimeter-wall watchtowers. Access for unauthorised persons has been restricted, and checks for vehicles, supplies and visitors have been intensified. The jail houses prisoners linked to terrorist activities, gang-related offences and serial blast cases.

A case has been registered at a cybercrime police station to trace the sender. The cybercrime technical team is working with digital experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory to examine server logs and email headers. Investigators are looking into whether the sender used an encrypted email service, a virtual private network or a proxy server.

The police administration has instructed district police chiefs and jail superintendents throughout Gujarat to remain on high alert. Authorities stated that further action will depend on the results of the technical analysis and the ongoing searches.
