Omar Abdullah visits fire-damaged Shiv Market in Jammu

The Chief Minister assured traders of government assistance after a blaze destroyed at least 40 shops on Sunday night.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the fire-damaged Shiv Market near Jammu Railway Station on Monday to assess the destruction. The visit followed a massive blaze that broke out at 10.45 pm on Sunday, according to reports from ThePrint and Telangana Today.

The fire gutted at least 40 shops, primarily those selling blankets, dry fruits and food supplies. Officials stated that the fire, which was allegedly triggered by a short circuit, lasted for several hours and was brought under control around 4 am on Monday.

During the inspection, Abdullah interacted with businessmen to understand their difficulties and promised that his government would provide all possible help to those affected. Arun Gupta, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jammu, briefed the Chief Minister on the extent of the losses to goods and business assets.

The district administration has already forwarded relief cases for the affected shopkeepers to the Chief Minister for the sanction of financial assistance, according to Daily Excelsior.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary and Minister for Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Ali Mohammad Sagar. Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Javed Ahmed Rana had also visited the site to express solidarity with the victims.
