Kerala announces 50 per cent concession on traffic fines

The e-challan amnesty scheme allows motorists to clear pending penalties for violations recorded up to March 31, 2026.

The Kerala government has announced a 50 per cent concession on traffic fines under its new e-challan amnesty scheme, according to The Hindu.

The offer applies to fines imposed by the police and the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) for violations recorded up to March 31, 2026. Motorists must pay the reduced amount by January 31, 2027.

As of March 31 this year, the state has 10,022,255 outstanding traffic violation cases, with a total pending fine amount of ₹907,74,86,813. The Transport Commissioner recommended the concession due to a significant increase in cases pending in courts.

The relief is exclusively for cases registered under specific sections of the Motor Vehicles Act that have not yet reached formal court proceedings. Violations occurring after March 31, 2026, will not be eligible for the concession.

The number of e-challans is rising as individuals use vehicles without renewing permits, fitness certificates, or transferring ownership. The government has issued directives to implement strict measures to ensure timely collection of fines for any new challans.
