Maharashtra FDA seizes sweets and food worth Rs 45 lakh

The food safety department conducted a three-day inspection drive across the state involving arrests and the suspension of five licences.

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized food products valued at Rs 45 lakh and arrested two people during a three-day inspection drive, according to Urban Acres.

In Mumbai, officials recovered 4,002 kg of halwa and other sweets from a luxury bus in Chembur. The FDA stated the sweets, worth Rs 11.11 lakh, were allegedly being moved in unhygienic conditions without temperature control.

The state-wide operation included the seizure of prohibited food items worth Rs 11.55 lakh in the Nashik and Konkan divisions. Officials also seized food stock valued at Rs 22.34 lakh across the Konkan, Pune, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Amravati, and Nagpur divisions.

The inspections, which covered hotels, restaurants, and manufacturing units, resulted in three FIRs, the sealing of two establishments, and the seizure of two vehicles. The department also suspended five establishment licences in the Buldhana, Akola, Washim, and Yavatmal districts.

The FDA reported finding suspected substandard food, labelling deficiencies, and violations of sanitary norms. Six samples have been sent for laboratory analysis to check for possible adulteration.

The department said further action will be taken once the laboratory test results are received.
