Man and boy arrested for alleged assault on One Nation volunteer
A 37-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy were apprehended following an incident involving a baseball bat in Torquay, Victoria.
A 37-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy were arrested on Sunday night following an alleged assault on a One Nation volunteer in Torquay, according to BBC News.
The incident occurred outside the volunteer's home, located approximately 100km south-west of Melbourne. The volunteer was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police stated.
The man faces assault charges and remains in custody, while the boy has been issued a caution. One Nation Victorian leader Warren Pickering claimed the pair allegedly interfered with election signs on the property before the attack.
Pickering said that political violence or intimidation is unacceptable and noted that volunteers should not be attacked regardless of their political affiliation. He stated that if people disagree with someone's politics, they should vote accordingly.
The alleged assault took place during a state election campaign in Victoria. This follows an attack on Federal MP Helen Haines last month, which resulted in her needing both legs amputated.
