Tamil Nadu allows six daily shows for new Tamil films
Theatres can now conduct up to six screenings per day for one week following a new film's release.
The Tamil Nadu government has authorised cinemas across the state to hold up to six screenings of new Tamil films every day for the first week of their release, according to reports by Urban Acres and The Hindu. The new order, issued on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, allows for an operating window between 6 am and 2.30 am the following day.
The decision follows requests from the Tamil Film Active Producers Associations, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association. Previously, the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, generally permitted four screenings a day under the ‘C’ Form licence. The state had recently allowed five daily shows for new releases during their first seven days, as well as on weekends and holidays.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directed the order, which also extends the six-show limit to Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and local festival days. The News Mill reported that this measure was introduced ahead of the Diwali festival to support producers, theatre owners, and audiences.
The government stated it intends to amend the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules to implement the change. Until the amendment is completed, theatres must continue to follow existing formal instructions and licensing frameworks for their screenings.
