AIADMK leader alleges mismanagement of onion supply in Tamil Nadu
Edappadi K Palaniswami claimed 450 tonnes of onions are unaccounted for and 250 tonnes are rotting in a Chennai warehouse.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has alleged that 450 tonnes of onions procured for Tamil Nadu cannot be accounted for, according to a report by Urban Acres on November 3, 2026.
Palaniswami also claimed that 250 tonnes of onions, which were transported to Chennai by freight train from northern states last week, are reportedly deteriorating at a Korukkupettai warehouse.
The AIADMK leader alleged the produce remained inside 10 trucks for three days without being unloaded and is beginning to rot. These onions were intended for distribution to other districts through fair-price shops to provide lower prices to consumers.
Regarding a separate consignment, Palaniswami alleged the Tamil Nadu government declined to accept 450 tonnes of onions procured through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) due to inadequate quality.
He further claimed that while the state declined the stock, NAFED stated the consignment had not been returned, creating an unresolved discrepancy.
Palaniswami criticised the state government's handling of the onion programme and called for closer implementation of measures to control price increases.
