Three BSF jawans injured in alleged smugglers' attack in Tripura
The assault in the Ashabari area of Boxanagar has caused tension and prompted a police investigation.
Three Border Security Force (BSF) personnel sustained serious head injuries during a violent assault by alleged smugglers in the Ashabari area of Boxanagar, Tripura, on Monday morning, according to reports by ANI and The News Mill.
The incident took place around 9 AM near Gate Nos. 174 and 175 by the barbed-wire fence under the Ashabari Border Outpost (BOP). The attackers reportedly targeted the service weapons of the jawans and vandalised a government vehicle used by the personnel from Rahimpur Kantamura BOP.
The confrontation began when personnel from the 49th Battalion pursued a group of suspected smugglers attempting to transport illegal goods. While the group dispersed, BSF personnel detained one individual, identified as Hefzur Rahman, approximately 400 metres from the location.
The Sentinel reported that the situation escalated into a clash involving local villagers, resulting in injuries to both the jawans and several villagers. The Sentinel stated that villagers allegedly attempted to overpower the security forces after the smugglers used force and tried to snatch a rifle.
Sources claimed that several Bangladeshi nationals residing in Ashabari may have been involved in the attack, though these claims have not been officially confirmed. CCTV footage from a house opposite the site has been collected by authorities for investigation.
Boxanagar Police are currently investigating the matter and tracking those responsible. Senior police and BSF officials have visited the area to review the circumstances of the assault.
