India to use flexible middle order in New Zealand ODI series
Captain Shubman Gill said the top four batting positions are settled ahead of the first match in Auckland on Wednesday.
India captain Shubman Gill has announced that the team will use a flexible approach for the number 5 and number 6 batting positions during the five-match ODI series against New Zealand. According to the Times of India, Gill stated that while the top four positions are fixed with right-handed batters, the middle order will change based on match requirements.
Gill explained that Axar Patel could be used if a left-handed option is required, and KL Rahul may also move into those roles depending on the situation. The series begins on Wednesday at Eden Park in Auckland.
The captain also addressed previous concerns regarding a neck injury. Gill had been sidelined from international cricket for nearly a month after suffering a cervical disc bulge and neck spasm during a Test match against South Africa in late 2025.
Gill dismissed any worries about his fitness, noting that he has been able to perform his fielding and batting duties for long periods without any trouble. He confirmed he is not experiencing any discomfort.
The ODI series schedule includes matches in Wellington on Saturday, Hamilton on Tuesday, and two games in Mount Maunganui on Friday and Sunday.
