Assam government employees practising polygamy to face dismissal, Sarma says

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state has amended service rules to include strict disciplinary actions against such employees.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that government employees found practising polygamy will face dismissal from service and disqualification from future government employment.

According to The Assam Tribune, the state government has amended the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules to introduce these stricter provisions.

The Chief Minister stated that the amendment has been incorporated under Rule 7, Clause 6, to ensure strict punishment for such violations.

Sarma said that with the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, polygamy is now illegal. He added that departmental proceedings will be initiated against any government servant found indulging in the practice.

The Chief Minister clarified that the UCC provisions implemented in Assam will apply uniformly to all religions, including Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.

The announcement follows a Cabinet meeting and marks an effort by the state government to enforce UCC provisions within the government workforce.
