IPS officer Anurag Sujania resigns after removal as Sagar SP

The 2014 batch officer submitted his resignation citing personal reasons following his transfer from the Sagar district.

IPS officer Anurag Sujania has resigned from government service citing personal reasons, according to reports by The Hindu and Hindustan Times. Sujania, a 2014 batch officer, submitted his resignation on November 2, days after being transferred from his post as Sagar Superintendent of Police (SP).

Sujania was transferred on October 27 along with Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal. Following the transfer, he was posted as an assistant inspector general (AIG) at the police headquarters in Bhopal. A senior IPS officer confirmed that the resignation request has been forwarded to the state government.

The transfer occurred after a hooch tragedy in Sagar district on September 7, where at least 20 people died and 100 others were hospitalised. The state government has since constituted a one-man judicial inquiry headed by retired Justice VPS Chauhan to investigate the matter.

An officer in Sagar, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Sujania felt the transfer was unfair because the police had conducted a swift investigation and arrested the accused in the Sagar case. Sujania previously served as SP in Morena and Mandsaur, and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh had previously noted that 24 people died in a 2021 Morena hooch tragedy during Sujania's tenure there.

The State IPS Association discussed the matter with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday. The Chief Minister also convened a meeting of senior police officers at his residence to review the law and order situation and discuss curbing the liquor mafia in Madhya Pradesh.
