Gujarat jails placed on high alert after email bomb threat

Security teams searched Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad as cyber investigators work to trace the sender of an email targeting multiple facilities.

Jails across Gujarat have been placed on high alert after an email containing a bomb threat was sent to the office of the Gujarat Director General of Police, according to a report by Urban Acres.

The email reportedly named several facilities, including jails in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat.

In Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and local police conducted searches at the Sabarmati Central Jail. The operation used sniffer dogs, metal detectors and additional equipment to inspect sensitive barracks and other areas, though no explosive devices were found.

Sabarmati jail houses gangsters, prisoners linked to terror-related activities and convicts in serial-blast cases. Authorities have increased security at the Anda Cell and other high-security zones, while also tightening checks on visitors, vehicles and supplies.

A case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station. Investigators and digital experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory are examining server logs and email headers to find the source. The technical inquiry is looking into whether the sender used encrypted email services, a virtual private network or a proxy server.

The statewide alert and searches are continuing while the technical investigation proceeds to identify the origin of the message.
