All 70 Prakasam Barrage gates opened to release water into Krishna river
The Water Resources Department suspended canal supplies as Cyclone Murasu caused heavy rainfall and significant crop damage in Andhra Pradesh.
The Water Resources Department (WRD) has opened all 70 gates of the Prakasam Barrage to discharge surplus water into the Krishna river, according to The Hindu. On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the barrage received 71,000 cusecs of water at 8 a.m., all of which was released towards the Bay of Bengal.
The water level at the barrage stood at 12 feet. To manage the discharge, officials raised 30 gates by two feet and 40 gates by one foot. The WRD has stopped water supply to the Guntur, Krishna Western, and Krishna Eastern canals to prevent potential flooding.
Cyclone Murasu has caused two deaths and damaged 52,459 hectares of crops in Andhra Pradesh, with preliminary loss estimates at ₹344 crore. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported wind speeds of 110-120 kmph during landfall. Currently, 12,230 people are staying in rehabilitation centres across the Palnadu, Bapatla, and Guntur districts.
Heavy rainfall has been recorded across the region, with Edlapadu in Palnadu district receiving 269.45 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. In NTR district, Chintalapadu recorded 178.25 mm, while Ghantasala in Krishna district saw 222.75 mm.
Inflows are being supplied by the Budameru, Munneru, and Keesara streams. Authorities are monitoring river inflows and upstream areas, while advising people living in low-lying areas near the riverbanks to follow official instructions.
