Trump vows to use veto power as Democrats win US Congress control

The US President said he would become 'Mr Veto' after the Democratic Party secured victories in both the House and Senate.

US President Donald Trump has vowed to use his presidential veto powers to block legislation passed by a Democratic-controlled Congress. According to reports from Firstpost, Outlook, and Mint, the Democratic Party has won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections.

The Democratic Party is leading the Senate by a 54-44 margin and the House of Representatives by a 228-139 margin, according to the Associated Press. This outcome means Democrats will take control when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.

Trump expressed his intention to use the veto power on social media and in interviews. He told the New York Post that he would become 'Mr Veto' and told Fox News that he was willing to work with the Democrats, stating, 'We'll probably work something out.'

Under Article I, Section 7 of the US Constitution, the president can return a bill to Congress with objections. While Congress can override a veto with a two-thirds majority in both chambers, the president also holds the power of a 'pocket veto' if Congress adjourns before a bill can be signed or returned within 10 days.

The shift in power means Democrats will gain greater control over government spending, congressional investigations, and Senate confirmations. Trump will retain executive powers to pursue policies within his existing authority during the final two years of his presidency.
