Democrats win control of US Congress in midterm elections

The party secured both the Senate and House of Representatives, marking significant shifts in states such as Texas and Georgia.

Democrats have won both the US Senate and House of Representatives, taking control of Congress for the remainder of Donald Trump's presidency, according to BBC News.

The party registered sizeable swings in states including Texas, Kansas, Ohio and South Carolina, which were won by Republican President Trump two years ago.

In Georgia, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is projected to win the governor's race, becoming the first woman and first black governor elected to the state's highest office. She defeated Republican Rick Jackson, a billionaire businessman endorsed by Trump.

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has also been projected to win his Senate re-election in Georgia against Republican Mike Collins. In New Hampshire, Democrat Chris Pappas is projected to defeat former Republican Senator John Sununu, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the Senate.

Hakeem Jeffries, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, is poised to take over as speaker if his colleagues choose him as leader. Jeffries told supporters on Tuesday that the day begins the "great American comeback."

President Trump said he would accept the results and is looking forward to working with the opposition, though he noted he retains the power to veto legislation. He also distanced himself from some Republican candidates, stating they were not his friend in some cases.
