Divided US Congress could impact Trump's final two years

Democrats may control the House of Representatives while Republicans retain the Senate following the 2026 midterm elections, according to Moneycontrol.

A split Congress could emerge from the 2026 US midterm elections, leaving Democrats in control of the House of Representatives and Republicans holding the Senate majority, according to Moneycontrol.

The elections involve all 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats. Before the polls, Republicans held a 53-47 Senate advantage and a slim majority in the House.

Early results show former North Carolina governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley to flip a Senate seat. In other races, Democrat Jon Ossoff and Mark Warner secured re-elections, while Republican Ashley Moody won in Florida.

A Democratic House would allow the opposition to control the legislative agenda and use congressional oversight to investigate the Trump administration. This includes the power to summon officials and issue subpoenas regarding immigration and federal spending.

However, any House legislation would still require approval from the Republican-controlled Senate. The Senate also retains the power to confirm presidential nominees for senior government roles and judicial positions.

A Democratic House could also initiate impeachment proceedings, though removal from office would require a two-thirds majority in the Senate. Divided control could also lead to confrontations over federal spending and government funding.
