IPS officer Anurag Sujania resigns after removal as Sagar SP
The 2014 batch officer submitted his resignation following a recent removal from his post in the Sagar district.
Anurag Sujania, a 38-year-old Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has resigned from government service, according to the Hindustan Times. Sujania, a 2014 batch officer, submitted his resignation on November 2 after being posted as assistant inspector general (AIG) at the police headquarters.
A senior IPS officer confirmed that Sujania resigned for personal reasons and that his request has been sent to the state government. The resignation follows the October 27 transfer of Sagar district SP and collector Pratibha Pal.
Sujania's removal from the Sagar district came two months after a hooch tragedy in Banda on September 7. In that incident, at least 20 people died after consuming spurious liquor sold for Rs 70 a bottle, while 100 others were hospitalised.
The state government has informed the high court that the cause of death for seven individuals in the tragedy remains unclear. A one-man judicial inquiry led by retired Justice VPS Chauhan has been established to investigate the matter.
Opposition leader and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh had previously criticised Sujania regarding the Sagar incident. Singh noted that 24 people died from spurious liquor in Morena district in 2021 during Sujania's tenure as SP there.
The State IPS Association met with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday to discuss the matter. The government has not yet reached a decision regarding the resignation.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also held a meeting with senior police officers on Tuesday evening to review the state's law and order and discuss curbing the liquor mafia in Madhya Pradesh.
