ITI students provide free repairs in flood-hit Ganjam district

Around 40 students are repairing electrical equipment and water systems in areas affected by cyclone Arnab.

Approximately 40 students from five government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and a state-run engineering school have begun offering free repair services in the cyclone Arnab-ravaged Ganjam district of Odisha. The students have been working since Monday, focusing primarily on Aska, which is the most affected town.

The group includes individuals from electrical, electronics, and plumber trades from ITIs in Berhampur, Sheragada, Purushottampur, Hinjilicut, and Chhatrapur, as well as the UCP Engineering School. They have already fixed electrical items at the Aska Sub-Divisional Hospital after it was submerged by floods, according to ThePrint.

District Skill Development and Employment Officer (DSDEO) Arpita Priyadarshibi said the students were divided into six teams. On Tuesday, they worked on motor pumps, air conditioners, and other appliances, while also performing plumbing tasks in various homes.

The restoration efforts are being managed by the district administration, with each team assigned a supervisor. Ranjan Kumar Parida, principal of ITI Berhampur, said the students demonstrated their skills in post-disaster rehabilitation by linking technical education with social service.

Heavy rains and flooding have disrupted electricity and water services across Ganjam, damaging water-lifting pumps and household equipment. Parida noted that the administration deployed the students on a rotational basis to assist thousands of families needing skilled manpower.

The DSDEO stated that the students will continue their visits to the affected regions over the coming days.
