Karnataka launches Jnana Setu scheme to distribute computers to students
The Higher Education department signed an agreement with Rotary Bengaluru to supply refurbished laptops and computers to government college students.
The Karnataka Higher Education department has signed an agreement with Rotary Bengaluru to provide refurbished laptops and computers to students in government polytechnic and degree colleges under the Jnana Setu programme, according to the Deccan Herald.
Under this initiative, 500 computers from Microsoft and 1,000 computers from Cognizant will soon be distributed to the colleges.
Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy said on Monday that there are over 550 colleges under the collegiate and technical education department with more than 5 lakh students.
Rayareddy stated that since a majority of these students are from economically backward sections of society, the Jnana Setu programme will help meet their academic demands.
The minister noted that some colleges have more than 3,000 students and the agreement with Rotary will help address those needs.
Rayareddy added that refurbishing computers used by corporate companies for up to four years will increase the life of the devices and reduce E-waste.
