Kerala forms road safety mission to reduce accident fatalities

Actor Mammootty has been appointed brand ambassador for the initiative led by Chief Minister V D Satheesan.

The Kerala government has established the Kerala State Road Safety Mission to decrease road accident deaths in the state, according to reports by The Hindu, Rediff and Deccan Chronicle. Chief Minister V D Satheesan will chair the mission, while Transport Minister C P John will serve as co-chairperson.

The official launch of the mission is scheduled for 11 am on November 15 at the Ernakulam Town Hall. Actor Mammootty has been named the brand ambassador for the campaign.

The initiative will operate on the concept of 'Enlighten and Enforce' to raise public awareness and ensure compliance with traffic rules. Transport Minister C P John said the mission aims to reach all age groups, from first-grade students to senior citizens, to make road safety a shared responsibility.

The project includes modernising roads, addressing accident-prone 'black spots', maintaining signboards, and widening zebra crossings. The government also plans to create safety zones near hospitals, schools, and places of worship using colour-coded markings.

To encourage responsible driving, 'safe driving clubs' will be formed at local and district levels. The government also intends to incorporate road safety into school curricula and develop mobile applications for the purpose.

The mission involves ministers from eight departments and seeks support from various social groups, including media and voluntary organisations. The government will also look for support from writers and musicians.
