LG Manoj Sinha sets six-month deadline for Design Your Degree rollout

The Lieutenant Governor chaired a Jammu Kashmir Higher Education Council meeting to discuss academic reforms and the integration of artificial intelligence.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level meeting of the Jammu Kashmir Higher Education Council (JKHEC) at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday, according to the Daily Excelsior. The meeting aimed to create a roadmap for higher education by focusing on academic excellence, research, and innovation.

Sinha set a six-month deadline for universities in Jammu Kashmir to implement the 'Design Your Degree' programme. He also urged institutions to collaborate by sharing academic credits, research laboratories, and resources.

The Council discussed recasting undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Members also discussed the modalities for establishing a Task Force to integrate artificial intelligence, including machine learning and deep learning, and data science into these programmes.

The Lieutenant Governor stated that transforming higher education into a holistic system is a shared responsibility and that the time has come to turn council initiatives into tangible achievements. He noted that successful implementation requires institutional reform and a long-term strategy.

JKHEC Vice Chairman Prof. Dinesh Singh called for policy directives to align curricula with the 'Design Your Degree' framework. The meeting included reviews of Engineering Kitchens, entrepreneurship programmes, and the reform of the fund allocation mechanism.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Minister Shamim Firdous, and various Vice Chancellors and directors from institutions including the University of Jammu, Kashmir University, IIT Jammu, and IIM Jammu.
