Actor Mammootty to lead Keralam road safety campaign

The Keralam Road Safety Mission will launch on November 15 to reduce the 3,700 annual road accident fatalities.

The Keralam Road Safety Mission will be launched on November 15 at 11 am at the Town Hall, according to reports by Rediff, Deccan Chronicle and ThePrint. Transport Minister C P John announced on Wednesday that actor Mammootty will serve as the brand ambassador for the mission.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan will head the initiative, with the Transport Minister acting as co-chairperson. Ministers from eight departments will also participate. The campaign follows a trend where approximately 3,700 people lose their lives in road accidents every year in the state.

The mission will operate under the concept of 'Enlighten and Enforce' to raise awareness and ensure compliance with traffic rules. Planned interventions include identifying accident-prone 'black spots', improving road signs, widening zebra crossings, and creating safety zones near hospitals, schools, and places of worship.

The government intends to include road safety in the school curriculum and form safe driving clubs. The programme will extend to district and local self-government levels. Citizens can submit suggestions through a dedicated mobile application and website.

Minister John stated the objective is to make road safety a shared responsibility for everyone from schoolchildren to senior citizens. The government also plans to seek support from other musicians, writers, and film actors to reach a wider audience.
