Mammootty to lead Keralam road safety campaign

The Keralam Road Safety Mission will launch on November 15 to reduce the 3,700 annual road accident fatalities.

The Keralam Road Safety Mission will be launched on November 15 at 11 am at the Town Hall, according to the Deccan Chronicle. Transport Minister C P John announced on Wednesday that actor Mammootty will serve as the brand ambassador for the mission.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan will head the mission, while the Transport Minister will act as co-chairperson. Ministers from eight departments will participate in the initiative, which will extend to district and local self-government levels.

The campaign follows the concept of 'Enlighten and Enforce' to raise public awareness and ensure strict compliance with traffic rules. The government aims to make road safety a shared responsibility involving everyone from schoolchildren to senior citizens.

Planned interventions include identifying accident-prone black spots, improving roads and signs, and widening zebra crossings. Special safety zones will be created near hospitals, schools, and places of worship.

The government plans to include road safety in the school curriculum and will form safe driving clubs. Citizens can submit suggestions through a dedicated website and mobile application.

Minister John stated that the government will also seek support from musicians, writers, and other film actors. He called for participation from media, voluntary organisations, political parties, and community groups.
