M K Stalin demands probe into Tamil Nadu power purchase rates

The DMK president has called for an independent investigation into alleged irregularities regarding electricity procurement from private generators.

DMK president M K Stalin has demanded an independent and transparent investigation into the procurement of electricity in Tamil Nadu, according to Urban Acres.

Stalin alleged on Wednesday that the state was considering buying power from private generators at rates of ₹35, ₹37, and ₹41.50 per unit. He noted that neighbouring Kerala reportedly had access to electricity at rates of ₹8.64, ₹12.50, and ₹14.50 per unit.

The DMK president claimed the price gap between the two states indicates possible large-scale irregularities. He also referred to reports regarding the removal of Kerala State Electricity Board chairperson M G Rajamanickam, alleging the official was removed after rejecting an offer to buy power at ₹8.6 per unit.

Stalin questioned the impartiality of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, noting that the agency falls under the purview of the electricity minister. He stated that this connection makes an independent inquiry necessary to examine purchases from private generators.

The allegations were based on media reports concerning electricity procurement proposals in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. No response has been provided by the Tamil Nadu electricity minister, the state government, or the private generators mentioned.
