BJP leaders urge all states to adopt Assam's polygamy dismissal policy

The party welcomed the Assam Cabinet's decision to terminate government employees found practicing polygamy or unauthorised second marriages.

BJP leaders on Wednesday expressed support for the Assam Cabinet's decision to dismiss government employees found practicing polygamy or unauthorised second marriages, according to The Shillong Times. The policy will apply to employees across all religious communities in the state.

The Assam Cabinet approved amendments to the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964, to include polygamy as a reason for dismissal. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on November 3, stating that those found violating the provision will lose their current jobs and be barred from future government employment.

BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo described polygamy as a social evil that causes suffering for women. He said that those practicing it should face legal action and imprisonment in addition to being disqualified from government jobs.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh said he believes every state should implement the policy now. BJP Bihar President Sanjay Saraogi called the move by Chief Minister Sarma a historic step for social justice and women's empowerment.

Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav also supported the Assam Chief Minister, noting that multiple marriages make the lives of women miserable. The state government has stated that strict disciplinary action will be taken against employees who violate these service rules.
