West Bengal BJP MLA files police complaint against six party workers

Subhasis Om alleged he was assaulted on Monday evening after protesting against extortion activities within his Debra constituency.

West Bengal BJP MLA Subhasis Om has lodged a complaint at the Debra police station in West Midnapore against six party workers for allegedly beating him on Monday evening, according to the Deccan Chronicle.

The accused include a booth president and a mandal president of the BJP. Om stated the assault occurred after he protested against extortion being carried out by them in his Debra constituency.

Om alleged on Tuesday that the extortion amounts to approximately Rs 4,000. He claimed that those involved in the activity had either joined the party before or after May 4.

The MLA said he tried to intervene in the dispute because of the government's policy of zero tolerance against extortion. He further alleged that extortion continues with the blessings of the district party leadership.

A counter complaint has been lodged against Om and his aides. The police are currently examining both sets of allegations, though no arrests have been made so far.
